In the past few weeks, we had help from two different groups of volunteers. The folks from Keller Williams Realty painted and built shelves for us, and the folks from the Yale Alumni Club created raised bed gardens for our property. We are lucky to have such support. This exciting new project will greatly help refugee parents and children living at Vive.  Many of our families are at a disadvantage and early literacy is a critical path to success for these children. Urban communities across the nation are concerned about the state of education in our country, particularly as it relates to high school graduation rates. The problems that lead to low graduation rates however, begin for students at the earliest ages. With intervention, success is possible—and funding for our Little Learning Academy will lead to success.

The 400 Mills Street Grant Program of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities selected this Vive project for funding.

Event Co-Chairs Tom and Shelly Schratz helped raise thousands of dollars to further Vive’s mission, and to fund its vital programs and services.

Awards were presented to volunteers and community partners.

• The Bonnie Butler Humanitarian Award was presented to long-time volunteers Paul and John Purcell.
• The John R. Long Award was presented to James R. Boldt, CEO of CTG.
• The Reverend A. Joseph Bissonette Award was presented to Reverend Richard Stenhouse.
• The Leadership Conference of Women Religious Award was presented to the Response To Love Center.

Our celebration was wonderful, but there is still work to do. Women and children are being held in detention centers. This must stop.

While we enjoyed our dinner, a mom and her five-year-old boy from Britain arrived at Vive. They were in a Family Detention Center (jailed) in Pennsylvania, with nowhere to go. As a community, we need to educate people about the impact of our services…and stop women and children from being detained.

The National Federation for Just Communities seeks to bring people together to achieve inclusion, equity, and justice. The NFJC actively works to dismantle all forms of prejudice and discrimination, promoting respect, understanding, and equality for all people.

Vive, Inc. was recognized as an agency that supports and promotes the goal of the National Federation for Just Communities. According to the NFJC website, recipients were recognized for the role they play in creating attitudes, behavior, and practices and that all members of society are impacted by bias and discrimination (www.federationforjustcommunities.org).

The Mary B. Talbert Civic and Cultural Club devotes its life work and commitment to uplifting our community through the education of our children, giving continuously to shelters for women and children, promoting youth groups, and helping families in need.

UUCA Run for Justice check presentation

June 17, 2012 – Angela Jordan-Mosely was presented with a proceeds check by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Amherst, New York. On May 25, 2012, the 1^st Annual 5K Run for Justice was held in Williamsville, New York, with over 200 participants. Supporters from ages 5 to 85 showed up for the run held on behalf of Vive.

Tee-shirts were distributed to the first to arrive and food, live entertainment, and basket raffles were available for all to enjoy. Tops Friendly Markets, Daemen College, West Herr New York, First Niagara, and the Glen Park Tavern were among sponsors for this event.

Vive Inc. appreciates the members and supporters of the 5K Run for Justice held by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Amherst, New York. It is efforts like these that help us assist asylum seekers’ journeys to freedom, peace, and justice. Thank you.
